When you think of attending an adult dance class, how does it make you feel? Excited? Nervous? Terrified?! Everything if valid! BUT, I am here to tell you that joining a dance class could be the best thing you do this year. Yes, it might be a little scary, yes, it might take a while to settle in, but yes, you will guaranteed gain so much from doing it. Whether you are new to dance or have done it for years, it’s time to get those dancing shoes on and join a class. Why? I’ve got ten fabulous reasons why!
There is no doubt our bodies get a little creakier and a little tighter as we get older. Dance is a fun way to maintain or improve fitness levels up, keeping our heart healthy, muscles strong, joints mobile, and body limber. Let's keep those bodies feeling young! If you have not taken a dance class before you might be surprised to know that the brain is arguably working just as hard as the body. It is not solely a physical challenge, it’s also one for the mind. Dance involves coordinating your body (which is especially a challenge if you have two left feet!), learning new moves, and retaining choreography. Connecting our body to our mind takes practise, so be prepared to laugh throughout the process!
As adults we spend a lot of our time focusing on other people. Whether it’s kids, people at work, pets, or relatives, it can result in our wellbeing becoming low in priority. At a dance class, you put your phone, laptop, work brain and everything else in the locker and leave it there. This time is for YOU, so enjoy being able to switch off from everything else and focus in on yourself. It’s so easy to move through our weeks without any time for ourselves. Yes, Netflix before bed can be a great unwind, but why not try an activity which nourishes body and mind, in a fun and sociable way?
Dance is a great way to express yourself creatively. Learn to use movement to share your personality, emotions, and individual flare, giving you an outlet you didn’t know you needed!
Learning something new is humbling, and it can take a while to feel comfortable in the unknown. Through dedication and commitment your skills will grow, giving you confidence in your body and it’s abilities, and confidence in your capacity to learn.
As adults it can feel hard to find the time to meet new people. Good news - this is the perfect way! Joining any kind of class is a great social activity, giving you the chance to connect with people who have similar interests whilst also learning new skills. Perhaps you will find new friendships in your dance partners.
As kids we are often keen to try lots of different hobbies: dancing, sports, arts and crafts, learning musical instruments… The list is endless. As adults, lots of us stick to what we know. Which is great! But isn’t it fun to try something new? And who knows, perhaps you’ll discover you are the next James Brown or Beyonce!
Physical movement is a great way to shake off any stress in your life. Put whatever you are feeling into your body, and let it out! Read more about how movement can help the stress go away - click here.
Maybe the idea of a dance class is terrifying to you. We all have things that we are quick to say no to. Why? Maybe because it scares us. Maybe it feels too far out of our comfort zone and we become self conscious. Well what do I say to this? All the more reason to do it. Let’s be openminded, let go of our ego, be like a kid and just have a go. No expectation and no judgement, just a willingness to try.
Ultimately, putting some music on and having a wiggle around is a great time. Once we let go of any inhibitions, we can find enjoyment in the multitude of benefits movement has to offer.
Have we convinced you to join your first class? I hope so! Read on for some some helpful tips to get you going.
The good news is that unlike kids classes, you do not have to commit to a full term. As adults our schedules can be busy and all over the shop, and dance teachers get this. Most places will offer drop in options, so you can attend as and when it works for you. This is also a great option if you are looking to dip your toes in and try multiple classes and styles. This way you can take the time to seek a style and teacher who resonate with you, making the experience even more enjoyable. You will learn that there are many to chose from, so don’t be afraid to speak to teachers and ask for recommendations. We are here to help you find the joy of moving your body!
Alternatively, there are usually options to book a whole term of classes at a slight discount. Before you commit yourself to the sessions, it might be in your best interests to check you vibe with the class style… Or perhaps you enjoy diving into the unknown head first!
Lastly, it's important to know that in an adult class there will not be a dress code. Whilst kids are often in a leotard and tights for ballet, the same rule will not apply for you. Fear not! Simply wear anything you feel comfortable to move in.
