Moving Waves has an excellent track record delivering arts and wellbeing activities for children and young people in schools, nurseries, care homes and community centres in London. You can trust that your kids are in extremely safe hands with our expert facilitators. Our Academy in Haringey has been running now since 2015 and we are absolutely delighted that Chestnuts Centre, where we opened our doors all those years ago, is where we call home for our weekly dance and acting classes. Chestnuts Centre is a wonderful community and creative hub for local people, and is perfectly positioned in Chestnuts Park, right next to the play park, which we know is an absolute favourite for the kids! There couldn't be a better place to host this Summer Camp!
During our one-week Summer Camp, we will deliver a fantastic array of activities, including some of our regular Academy classes (street dance, contemporary, acting, and ballet with your favourite teachers), plus exciting extras such as yoga, musical theatre, stand-up comedy and African drumming!
Participating in any artistic or creative activity is invaluable for children and young people, and it’s important that everybody has access to a wide range of art forms and cultural opportunities. The summer break can feel long (for both the kids and parents/carers!) and creative activity is a super way of keeping children and young people engaged, stimulated, active and happy, with no room for boredom to creep in! Scroll down to learn more about some of the activities that we have on offer this summer.
For those of you already familiar with our Haringey Academy, you’ll know that street dance is one of the styles taught by the fabulous Moving Waves Founder, Tina Euri! Street dance is a super fun style for kids as it’s so energetic. Your kids will explore commercial, hip hop and house dance styles through taught choreography, all the while developing strength, stamina and body coordination. And don’t forget all that individuality they’ll express through some pretty epic freestyling too!
Contemporary dance classes offer beautiful opportunities for children to be creative through movement. In addition to developing contemporary technique and foundational dance skills that will serve them well in other styles such as jazz, lyrical, modern and ballet, contemporary dance offers space to develop independent expressivity exercised through games, tasks, improvisation and creating choreography.
We offer fresh teaching approaches to ballet that differ from ‘traditional’ stricter ballet school methods. Ballet at our academy is taught in a creative, nurturing way. The children have opportunities to explore ballet steps and traditions with storytelling and imaginative play, developing ballet technique and knowledge, whilst maintaining their own unique sense of self-expression.
Our drama and acting classes help children and young people develop confidence and communication through interactive play, drama games, coaching and devising work. Being an actor in the modern world requires a variety of performing skills, including stage and screen acting techniques and filmmaking knowledge. Even if your little one doesn’t dream of being a Shakespearean actor or Hollywood star, the skills that children and young people develop in drama classes are invaluable for their engagement and interaction with other people, at school, with their peers, and in their future lives, whatever exciting things they go on to do!
Don’t underestimate the power of yoga for kids, and how utterly awesome kids’ yoga classes can be! Kids are introduced to yoga philosophy and poses through storytelling, dancing, singing, chanting, and interactive games. Our yoga for teens sits somewhere between the playfulness of a child’s class and the structure of an adult’s class. Classes for kids and teens are so much fun and a superb compliment to the other creative activities on offer during this Summer Camp.
All the super cool, action kids out there they are going to love exploring martial arts. Yes, it’s energetic and helps kids learn about and understand their body in space, but it’s also an incredible practice that develops focus, respect, balance and improves general health. Win, win!
This one we are very excited about (and watch this space because we’ll be introducing this at the Academy next academic year!) This is an all-rounder class that the dancers, singers and young actors out there are absolutely going to love. Belting out West End show tunes, learning choreography from the hottest musicals and reciting lines from the Broadway classics, this joyful session is full of enough musical heart to lift any spirit. The kids will be beaming as they develop a wide range of imperative performing arts skills.
Whose kid has asked for a drum kit?! (And you said no, right?! For your own sanity and in a bid to keep the peace with the neighbours)! Or maybe your teen still can’t stop tapping or drumming anything around them? Well, let that budding percussionist pick up a djembe or a dundun and be introduced to the sound of African drums. Learn about the important role drums play in African life and culture, whilst developing motor skills and developing cognitive functions.
If your kid is cracking jokes and always trying to make you laugh, then they’re going to love this! A whole session dedicated to the cheeky chappies and giggling gals. Jam packed with games and tasks to help them create their own material and feel comfortable delivering it in front of a small crowd. They’ll impress with their developed sketches, solo work and comedy improv skills. Trust us, they will have so much fun (and so will we!)
We excel at our arts and crafts sessions! Some of you might remember our online arts and crafts classes during the pandemic lockdowns. We can’t wait to deliver these again, but this time in person! These sessions are fantastic for helping kids and young people explore their inner artist by experimenting with different art techniques and media. Whilst developing crafty and fine art skills, participants will develop creativity and self-expression. We always use sustainable and recyclable materials for these sessions. I can't wait to see the fantastic crafts the kids create this summer!
Kids love a story, whether it’s listening to one or creating one. They’ll all enjoy this interactive session that encourages creativity, theatricality and teamwork, where their imaginations can run wild!
